Expressive Arts and Animal-Assisted Learning

Individual Sessions

Our Expressive Arts and Animal-Assisted Learning Program provides therapeutic learning opportunities in a safe, non-judgemental environment. Expressive Art utilizes right brain functioning, lowers anxiety, improves mental health, allows for nonverbal expression, and supports the client’s overall ability to build healthy relationships.

Children and teens have an innate need to build relationships through play. The expressive art portion of our program allows for this developmentally appropriate aspect to be therapeutically addressed. Clients have the opportunity to engage with a variety of art materials including sandtrays, clay, collage materials, markers and paints as a means to express themselves.

Time spent forming relationships with the animals is also an integral part of this program. Time with animals has been shown to calm the central nervous system, decrease anxiety and support a strong sense of compassion. It can be beneficial for all individuals yet particularly supportive for those experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, and relational conflicts.

These sessions are tailored to each individual’s needs and participants have the option of flowing between time with the animals and expressive art time in the studio. Ages 8 and up.

(6 week sessions)

These sessions are designed for children and youth and provide opportunity to experience growth, connection and belonging as they engage in expressive art, engagement with animals and Yoga/Mindfulness activities. These experiences support the development of confidence, caring for others and a strong sense of self while increasing the ability to handle stress and adversity. Participants learn about and experience the regulatory effects of engaging with animals and nature. They are then able to process their experiences in our studio using art materials and through group activities. Movement activities are woven into the program to support body awareness and a sense of agency. Groups are small and limited to 4-6 participants.
